So many of you have asked why we are doing Lent. Its often thought of as a Catholic tradition, but actually it goes way back to the days of early Christians. Our church has started participating in Lent for the past few years and at first I was skeptical because I had participated in Lent before and actually did not even know the purpose of it. The point of Lent is to give up/sacrifice a part of your life that currently takes up a large portion of your time, so that in doing so you rememeber the sacrifice's Christ made for you in the time leading up to his death and resurrection. Each time you think about doing the thing you gave up, you remember what christ gave up for you. And there is even a deeper part of Lent than just giving something up. There are 3 parts, the first being Giving up something, the second is Prayer, and the third is Giving(money or time/volunteering etc..).
I recently heard a statistic that the average person spends 55 minutes a day on facebook. For me, that would probably be true since I'm always looking at my ipod to get current updates and things. I don't spend 55 minutes strait just looking at facebook, but a few minutes here and there really do add up. So for me, I'm giving up Facebook during lent. I will still be doing my business page on facebook since I have to keep up with orders for my business, but I will not be checking my personal facebook page during this time. On sundays, it is considered a day of "rest" and therefore I can check it on that day.
Here is a video blog our associate pastor made explaining why our church participates in Lent.
